GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College got some revenge while continuing its home dominance of Knox College in men's basketball action Tuesday at Darby Gymnasium.
The Pioneers, who lost to the Prairie Fire by 14 points last week, rolled up a 115-90 victory while extending their winning streak against Knox at home to 18 games dating back to the 2000-01 season. Additionally, Grinnell has now beaten Knox 22 of 24 times since the 2005-06 campaign.
Vinny Curta '19 used another dazzling performance at the free throw line to close in on two NCAA Division III national marks. He hit 15-of-16 shots from the charity stripe to boost his season totals to 244-of-320. That leaves Curta five made free throws and six attempts away from D-III records for a season.
Curta finished with a game-high 31 points and also had five steals. His 762 points this season rank fourth all-time in the MWC and 504 career made free throws rank sixth.
The Pioneers' balanced scoring attack featured six players in double figures.
Sean Cullinane '18 had the hot hand from outside, going 6-of-11 from 3-point land in his final game at Darby while scoring 18 points.
Ky-Sean Johnson '19,
Zack Stice '21 and
Hannes Kogelnik '21 each had 13 points and
Tyler Grumhaus '21 tied a career-high with 10. Stice also dished out a career-best four assists and Kogelnik added three steals.
Ikaika Phillip '18 came up with four rebounds and four steals for Grinnell (13-10, 8-9 Midwest Conference).
Grinnell showed it meant business from the start. After Knox (7-17, 5-12 MWC) got out to a 4-0 lead, the Pioneers scored 20 of the next 22 points. Consecutive 3-pointers by Grumhaus, Curta and Johnson put the Pioneers ahead 9-4.
After Knox scored, Stice, Cullinane and Phillip all had treys and
Noah Jacobson '20 a layup to push the Pioneers ahead 20-6 with 14:29 left in the half.
Knox got as close as four a few times after that, but the Pioneers went on an 11-2 run later in the half to put some distance between the teams. Grumhaus and Kogelnik hit two free throws each during the run, Phillip made a layup, Curta sank two charity shots and Johnson registered a 3-pointer to push the hosts ahead 39-26.
Grinnell led 55-38 at halftime and never looked back after that.
The Pioneers close out their 2017-18 campaign Saturday against Illinois College. Action at Jacksonville, Ill., begins at 1 p.m.
