CLERMONT, Fla. – Grinnell College's softball team attacked the record book while sweeping past a pair of opponents to open its spring break trip Monday.
The Pioneers set a new school standard for home runs in a game with four in a 9-1, six-inning win over Farmingdale State to start the day. Additionally,
Darice Wheeler '21 tied a school mark with a pair of round-trippers.
Wheeler joined three other players who have hit two home runs in a game. The previous team home run mark for a contest was three, established two times.
Grinnell pounded out 15 hits in the win, with
Emily Jordan '19 tying a Pioneer record with four hits including a double.
Kayla Morrissey '18 tripled and singled, while
Flynn Johnson '21 and Wheeler also had two hits.
Ashley Wehrenberg '19 contributed a double. Morrissey is now tied for Grinnell's career lead in triples with 11.
Melissa Anderson '18 was the winning pitcher, scattering four hits over five innings.
Wheeler's solo homer to left gave Grinnell its first-inning run, while Morrissey added an RBI triple to right in the second frame and later scored herself.
Farmingdale State scored in the third inning, but Grinnell broke things open in the sixth with the aid of three home runs. Morrissey had an RBI single to center, Wheeler bashed a two-run homer to center, Johnson added a home run to center and
Sidney Litke '19 blasted a two-run homer to right.
In the opener, Wheeler tied the school mark for doubles in a game with three as Grinnell disposed of Carroll University 2-0.
Maggie Remus '18 and Anderson combined on the pitching shutout, with Remus going six innings and striking out two to earn the win. Anderson didn't give up a hit and earned the save.
Grinnell got all the runs it needed in the third inning when Morrissey walked, moved to second on Bishop-Parise's single to right and scored on Wheeler's double to center. Johnson followed with an infield RBI single.
Carroll threatened in the seventh when the leadoff batter doubled, but Anderson induced a double-play lineout and got the next batter to fly out to end the game.
Remus now has 13 career wins, good for sixth all-time at Grinnell. Morrissey has 225 career assists, putting her fifth all-time at the school, and has 31 walks as does Anderson which is tied for eighth.
The Pioneers, 2-2 on the season, take on Worcester State and Wesleyan on Tuesday.
