Grinnell baseball team collects first wins in Florida

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Grinnell College's baseball team had a pair of big performances Saturday as it collected its first wins on its Florida trip.

Grinnell swept Worcester State University by scores of 9-3 and 5-2 with solid pitching performances. Andrew Mack '18 was the winner in the first game, giving up two hits and a run while striking out five. Ryan Moeller '21 finished things off by tossing two-hit ball and fanning three in three innings.

In the second game, Sam LaMotte '20 struck out five over five innings of work and Nate Lu '21 tossed scoreless ball and fanned two in two innings to collect the save.

Grinnell pounded out 12 hits in the opener, including two apiece by Andrew Shults '19, Sam Galanek '18, Carson Gampell '20, Jared Booth '21 and Nathan Zaroban '18.

The Pioneers got out to a 2-0 lead with solo runs in the first and third frames. Gampell had an RBI double to center in the first and Booth's infield single to second base in the third pushed across another run.

Worcester State cut the gap in half in the bottom of the third, but Grinnell caught fire in the fourth and fifth innings. Galenek had an RBI single to center and Gampell a two-run double to left in the fourth to make it 5-1, and Zaroban's RBI triple to center and Benjamin Wong's sacrifice fly to center in the fifth made it 7-1.

Worcester State cut the gap to 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth, but Grinnell added some insurance in the seventh via RBI singles to center by Wong and Quinton McNitt '21.

Grinnell had nine hits in the second game, with Shults leading the charge with three.

Galanek's RBI single to left in the first put Grinnell ahead 1-0, but Worcester State countered with two runs in the third. In the bottom of the inning, Brad Weaver '18 tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left.

Grinnell went ahead to stay in the fourth on Shults' two-run triple to center and added another run in the sixth when he pushed across a run on a fielder's choice.

The Pioneers began Sunday's action with a 16-4 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, ranked fourth in the nation. The Pioneers scored all their runs in the seventh inning with the aid of RBI singles by Riley Guieb '21 and Julian Cabrera '19 and bases-loaded walk by Jack Hager '19.

Brock Weirather '21 was the pitcher of record.

The Pioneers finished off the weekend with a 13-10 loss to UW-Stevens Point, a game in which they outhit their foes 15-14. Weaver and Booth each had three hits for Grinnell.

The Pioneers trailed 1-0 before scoring three runs in both the second and third innings. An RBI single by Zaroban sparked the second inning, and he added an RBI double in the third.

Grinnell later went up 10-7 with two-run outbursts in the fourth and sixth frames. Weaver had an RBI double in the fourth and Booth a run-scoring double in the sixth.

However, UW-Stevens Point scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to grab the lead for good.

Joe Dudley '20 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell.

Grinnell, 3-9, closes out its trip to Florida Monday with a game against the University of St. Thomas.
