MOUNT VERNON, Iowa -Grinnell College's baseball team rallied in the final inning, but came up just short in a 5-3 setback at Cornell College on a chilly Monday.
The Pioneers fell behind 5-0 after giving up four runs in the third inning and another in the sixth. But in the ninth, they came to life. With one out,
Benjamin Wong '18 walked,
Brad Weaver '18 singled to right and Midwest Conference Player of the Week
Quinton McNitt '21 singled to left to bring in a run.
Andrew Shults '19 then singled to left to load the bases before
Sam Galanek '18 delivered a two-run single to left to make it 5-3. However, Shults got thrown out at third on a very close play and Cornell followed with a strikeout to end the game.
Grinnell still managed wins in three of the four games of the series and is 3-1 in the MWC and 6-11 overall. The Rams are 1-3 in the league and 6-11 in all games.
Galanek, who moved up Grinnell's career chart in three categories during the series, had two of the Pioneers' eight hits. Galanek is now tied for first in career sacrifice flies with
Matt Hammond at 14. He is eighth in putouts at 485 and tied for eighth in RBIs with 82.
Shults also had two hits for Grinnell, while
Ryan Chang '21 was the pitcher of decision.
The Pioneers play four games at Illinois College this weekend.
