JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Grinnell College's baseball team kept up its hot streak Sunday, winning for the fifth time in its last seven outings with a 10-4 decision over Illinois College on a blustery and chilly day.
The Pioneers pounded out 12 hits, including four doubles, in the opening game and were paced by
Carson Gampell's '20 4-for-5 performance at the plate. He had two RBIs and three runs scored.
Quinton McNitt '21 added two hits.
After the Blueboys scored in the top of the first, Grinnell took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Andrew Shults '19 scored on a wild pitch, Gampell sent an RBI single up the middle and
Jared Booth '21 hit a sacrifice fly to right.
Illinois College closed within 3-2 in the top of the third, but again the Pioneers responded. Booth had a double down the left-field line to score a run,
Brad Weaver '18 had an RBI single through the left side, McNitt added an RBI single down the left-field line and Shults was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 7-2.
The Blueboys scored twice in the seventh, but Grinnell got some breathing room with three runs in the eighth as Gampell had an RBI single to center andÂ
Nathan Zaroban '18 belted a two-run single through the left side.
Jacob Morsch '21 was the winning pitcher, giving up nine hits and striking out two in 6-1/3 innings.
The second game of the twin bill was halted due to snow in the fourth inning with the Blueboys leading 5-2. There has been no decision as to a date of continuation.
Grinnell is 5-2 in the Midwest Conference and 8-12 overall, while the Blueboys moved to 5-2 in the league and 9-8 in all games.
