Pioneers combine quick scores and stellar defense for 2-0 victory at Simpson

INDIANOLA, Iowa - A quick one-two punch on offense, combined with another stellar defensive effort, delivered the Grinnell College women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Simpson College Thursday night.

The Pioneers recorded their second shutout in a row, and Elizabeth Hunt '21 earned her first solo shutout as a keeper while making three saves in the process.

Grinnell scored in rapid-fire succession in the middle part of the game. After a scoreless first half, Jordan Maddaus '19 scored her first goal of the season and ninth of her career with a shot from 15 yards out in the 55th minute. Not even four minutes later, Valencia Alvarez '20 found the back of the net off a cross for her second goal of the year and 10th of her career. Maddaus had the assist, her first of the year.

After scoring just one goal in its first three outings, Grinnell has scored six in its past two matches. Grinnell won the shots battle 8-5, with Alvarez taking three shots and Simona Bambi '20, Alyssa Radakovich '21, Maddaus, Anna Engelhardt '21 and Halle Remash '20 taking one apiece.

After starting the season 0-2-1, the Pioneers have reeled off two wins in a row and are now 2-2-1. Additionally, Grinnell is 5-0-1 against Simpson in the past six meetings between the teams. The Storm dipped to 1-4-1 with the loss.

Grinnell travels to Pella next Wednesday to face Central College. Kickoff is at 4:30 p.m.
