PELLA, Iowa - In a women's soccer contest where Grinnell College wrested control from Central College in the second half, only a penalty kick proved to be the difference.
Grinnell rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit with a second-half goal, all while gaining control of action as the half wound down. Forced into overtime, a foul was whistled on Grinnell in the box two minutes into the extra period and the Dutch made the penalty shot for a 2-1 victory.
Grinnell's score came in the 76th minute when
Elyse Salpekar '19 tallied her first goal of the season and second of her career, hitting from the right side of the box as the ball sailed over the head of the Central keeper.
Esmé Kayim-Yanko '21 had the assist, her first of the year.
Elizabeth Hunt '21, the Midwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week, had another strong outing while making three saves for Grinnell.
After getting outshot 14-5 in the first half and Central holding a 6-0 edge in corner kicks, the Dutch had only an 8-7 margin in second-half shots. Salpekar and
Jordan Maddaus '19 each had two shots for Grinnell, and both on goal.
Simona Bambi '20 and
Michellie Thurman '19 also had two shots apiece.
Grinnell is now 2-3-1 on the season, while the Dutch improved to 4-2-1. The Pioneers open MWC play Saturday at Beloit College. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.
