Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Pioneer women's soccer team adds to impressive win streak over Beloit with 4-1 MWC-opening victory

BELOIT, Wis. – Grinnell College's women's soccer team has owned its series with Beloit College over the years, and Saturday the Pioneers extended that streak in dominating fashion.

The Pioneers, who entered the contest having won 25 of the past 26 meetings with the Buccaneers dating back to 1988 (the only non-win for Grinnell was a tie), added to that streak with a 4-1 victory to open Midwest Conference play.

Grinnell spread the wealth offensively, as four different Pioneers found the scoring column. The Pioneers showed they meant business from the start, when Valencia Alvarez '20 scored just five minutes into the game with her team-high third goal of the year. Elyse Salpekar '19 had her first assist of the year on the play.

Simona Bambi '20 followed with her first goal of the year just six minutes later on an assist by Jordan Maddaus '19, her team-high second. Alyssa Radakovich '21 made it a 3-0 in the final minute before halftime with her second score of the year on Bambi's second assist of 2018.

Beloit got a goal in the 72nd minute, but then it was all Grinnell again as Salpekar recorded her second goal of the season in the 85th minute on an assist by Alvarez, her first.

Grinnell managed 10 shots in the game, with three by Bambi, two from Alvarez and one each from Salpekar, Gwen Holtzman '19, Maddaus, Radakovich and Eliza Bunnell '19. Keeper Elizabeth Hunt '21 had another impressive outing, giving up just one goal in 90 minutes while making six saves.

Grinnell, 3-3-1 overall, returns to Springer Field next weekend beginning with a 1:30 p.m. contest against Lake Forest College Saturday. Beloit is now 1-1 in the league and 2-5 in all games.
