GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's women's soccer team struck immediately and made it last in a 1-0 victory over Lake Forest College on a cold and rainy Saturday at Springer Field.
Grinnell wasted no time taking advantage of the contest, scoring in the third minute when
Elyse Salpekar '19 tallied her team-high third goal of the season. On the play,
Jordan Maddaus '19 received a breakaway pass and took it down the center of the field. She found Salpekar right before entering the box, and Salpekar went through the right side of the box and flicked the ball past the keeper and into the net. It was the team-high third assist of the season for Maddaus.
That's all the cushion Grinnell keeper
Elizabeth Hunt '21 needed, as she delivered her second shutout of the season and career.
The Pioneers owned the shots battle 9-7, with
Valencia Alvarez '20 taking three, Salpekar a pair and
Simona Bambi '20, Maddaus,
Lauren Edwards '20 and
Eliza Bunnell '19 one apiece.
Grinnell stayed perfect in the Midwest Conference with the win, moving to 2-0 in the league and 4-3-1 overall. Lake Forest fell to 0-3 in the MWC and 4-7 in all contests.
The Pioneers are back at Springer Field Sunday when Lawrence University visits for a MWC meeting. Kickoff is at 11 a.m.
