Pioneer men's soccer team strikes first, but Lake Forest rallies for win

GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's steady scorer Jasper Yang '21 struck first, but Lake Forest College rallied to secure a 3-1 men's soccer victory on a blustery Saturday at Springer Field.

Grinnell owned the shots battle 15-8, including 10 on goal while falling to 1-1 in the Midwest Conference and 4-4 overall. Lake Forest improved to 2-0 in the league and 6-3-1 in all games.

Yang scored just nine minutes into the contest, his team-high eighth goal this season and 12th of his career. On the play, Ray Goedeker '22 was outside the box and booted the ball across to the left side of the goal, and Yang tapped it in for a 1-0 lead. It was Goedeker's first assist of his career.

However, Lake Forest scored six minutes later on a penalty kick and got another goal in the 28th minute. The Foresters added some insurance with a goal in the 84th minute.

Yang, Zac Reeves '20 and Evan Sorenson '19 each had three shots for Grinnell, while Goedeker added two and Mikoto Kobayashi '20, Zach Steinberg '20, Keegan Kaas '22 and Max Sorenson '22 one each. Jared Cloutier '20 made two saves at keeper for Grinnell.

The Pioneers are back at Springer Field Sunday when Lawrence University visits for a MWC meeting. Kickoff is at 11 a.m.
