Pioneers make a dent on all-time records list in win over Lawrence

GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's 7-3 men's soccer win over Lawrence University on Sunday was one for the record books.

The Pioneers made several entries into the program's all-time bests list, pounding out 43 shots in the Midwest Conference win. That ranks second all-time at Grinnell, just two shy of the school record of 45 against Eureka in 2010. Also, the victory is Grinnell's seventh in a row against Lawrence.

Grinnell, 2-1 in the league and 5-4 overall, tallied five assists which is eighth all-time at Grinnell. The 19 total points (seven goals, five assists) is tied for eighth in Grinnell history. Additionally, Ray Goedeker '22 had two assists which is tied for fifth on the Pioneers' chart and Keegan Kaas '22 earned the same ranking for shots in a game with nine.

The Pioneers' goal total in the contest is the most since erupting for 10 against Beloit College in 2015.

Jasper Yang '21, Grinnell's season leader in goals, fittingly opened the contest with a score in the 21st minute. On the play, Goedeker sent a ball into the box and Yang worked a one-on-one goal to the left side of the keeper. It was his ninth goal of the year.

Lawrence, 0-3 in the MWC and 2-8 overall, evened the game in the 27th minute before Grinnell made it 3-1 by halftime. In the 32nd minute, Evan Sorenson '19 scored his second goal of the season when Goedeker crossed the ball from the right side. Sorenson collected it and sent it into the middle of the goal. Eleven minutes later, Zac Reeves '21 scored on a free kick right beyond the box.

The Pioneers upped their lead to 4-1 in the 72nd minute when Goedeker scored his second goal of the season. On the play, Mikoto Kobayashi '20 sent in a corner kick that Goedeker put into the net.

Lawrence made it 4-2 in the 76th minute when Grinnell went to work, scoring three goals in five minutes. In the 79th minute, Max Sorenson '22 scored the first goal of his career when Kaas crossed the ball to him and he shot it into the left side of the net. Lawrence then scored in the 80th minute to make it 5-3.

Kaas added the first goal of his career in the 82nd minute, and Sam Naik '21 got the first of his career when Thomas Pflipsen '20 gave him the ball right above the box after which he kicked it into the right corner of the net.

Besides Kaas' nine shots, Goedeker had seven, Evan Sorenson six and Yang and Naik four each. Keeper Jared Cloutier '20 got the win, working 83 minutes as Lawrence got off six shots. Ben Heller '20 played the final eight minutes at keeper and had one save.

The Pioneers entertain Knox College next Saturday at 1 p.m.
