GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's soccer team not only got its first Midwest Conference win of the season Saturday afternoon, but did so in dominating fashion.
The Pioneers led 2-0 at halftime and erupted for four second-half goals to blow past Ripon College 6-1 at Springer Field.
Grinnell dominated the contest, holding a 28-5 edge in shots including 16-2 in shots on goal, and winning the corner kicks battle by a 10-2 margin.
Grinnell spread the wealth in the game, as six players accounted for the six goals.
Ray Goedeker '22 gave Grinnell a lead it would never relinquish with his fourth goal of the season just five minutes into the contest.
Jasper Yang '21, who recorded his team-high fifth assist of the season, sent a corner kick in from the left side. Goedeker leaped and bumped a header into the net for the goal.
Grinnell made it 2-0 in the 39th minute when
Max Sorenson '22 recorded his second goal of the season. Following a free kick,
Keegan Kaas '22 got a touch near the left side of the net. He booted it and it ricocheted off the crossbar to the right, where Sorenson promptly sent a short shot into the net. It was the first assist of the season for Kaas.
Michael Spicer '21 got into the scoring act with the first goal of his career in the 51st minute.
Zach Steinberg '20, who recorded his first assist of the year, lofted a perfect cross from near the right end line into the box, where Spicer headed the ball into the left part of the net to make it 3-0.
Just two minutes later,
Jasper Yang '21 recorded his team-high eighth goal of the season to make it 4-0. After a free kick was sent into the box, the ball bounced around before Yang possessed it and kicked a bullet into the bottom right part of the net. Yang now ranks ninth in program history for goals with 24 and shots attempted with 109.
Grinnell made it 5-0 in the 59th minute.
Ben Heller '20 hit a short corner kick to
Davis Provost '23, who was near the sideline on the left side. Provost dribbled a few times and crossed the ball toward the goal. It curled its way over the keeper and into the right side of the net to give Provost the first goal of his career.
Ripon broke onto the scoreboard in the 73rd minute with a penalty kick goal.
Mikoto Kobayashi '20 completed the scoring in the 77th minute with his fourth goal of the year as he scored on a deflection after Steinberg had contacted the ball near the net.
Yang and Provost each had four shots for the Pioneers, who are 5-8-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the league, while
Noah Guyton '23, Spicer and Sorenson had three each. Keeper
Jared Cloutier '20 recorded one save while collecting the 20th win of his career at keeper.
With the loss, Ripon dipped to 1-11-1 overall and 0-4 in the MWC.
Grinnell plays its final home match of the season Sunday when St. Norbert College visits Springer Field. The Senior Day contest is slated for 1:30 p.m.
