Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Grinnell owns shots battle, but 2 late goals send preseason MWC favorite St. Norbert to victory

GRINNELL, Iowa – St. Norbert College may have been the preseason favorite to win the Midwest Conference men's soccer title, but that didn't faze Grinnell College in the slightest.

Playing with the energy provided by Senior Day, the Pioneers outshot the Green Knights and tied the game in the 80th minute before two late goals by the visitors gave them a 3-1 win at Springer Field Sunday afternoon.

Grinnell won the shots battle 16-12, including 11-5 in the second half, and tied the Green Knights in corner kicks 8-all.

St. Norbert grabbed a 1-0 halftime lead with a goal in the 13th minute. The score remained that way until the 80th minute when Henry Cladouhos '22 found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season. Following a St. Norbert goal kick, Jasper Yang '21 gained possession of the ball near midfield. He rushed down the field and worked a pass to Cladouhos, who beat his defender into the box and sent a shot from the right side past the diving keeper into the left bottom part of the net. It was Yang's team-high sixth assist of the year.

But four minutes later, the Green Knights were awarded a penalty shot after a foul was called in the box. They made that shot, and got an insurance goal a minute later to secure the win and improve to 4-1-1 in the MWC and 11-4-2 overall.

Grinnell, 5-9-1 overall and 1-5-1 in the league, got five shots from Mikoto Kobayashi '20, four from Yang and three from Cladouhos.

Jared Cloutier '20 made five saves as Grinnell's keeper and now has 153 for his career, which ranks eighth in Pioneer history. He is fourth in games played at keeper with 51.

The Pioneers travel to Monmouth College Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. test.
