GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's women's soccer team battled on even terms with St. Norbert College for all 110 minutes of Sunday's Midwest Conference showdown.
The balanced nature of the game was shown in the result, as the teams fought their way to a 1-all, double-overtime tie at Springer Field.
Grinnell's
Cally Carr '21 not only scored the first goal of her career in the 34th minute, but did it in style with the most perfect of corner kicks. Lining up in the left corner of the field, Carr lofted a ball that entered the box and curled its way over the keeper's outstretched hands and into the right side of the net.
The Green Knights countered with a goal right before halftime to force a 1-all tie. Both teams had chances in the second half, as well as the first overtime where Grinnell held a 3-0 edge in shots but couldn't score. Neither team could find the back of the net in the second extra period either, resulting in the tie.
Elizabeth Hunt '21 worked another strong game at keeper for Grinnell, making seven saves. She now ranks fourth in program history with 164 career saves.
The Pioneers, who had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks, also led the shots battle 17-14. Carr had six shots,
Simo Bambi '20 added three and
Valencia Alvarez '20 and
Esmé Kayim-Yanko '21 had two apiece.
Grinnell remains in good shape for qualifying for the MWC Tournament with a 3-1-2 mark in league play and 6-5-3 record overall. St. Norbert fell to 2-3-1 in the MWC and 5-9-1 overall.
The Pioneers have another big league test Wednesday when Cornell College visits Springer Field for a makeup contest. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.
