Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Grinnell men's soccer team uses big rally to drop Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ill. - Like a seasoned marathon runner, the Grinnell College men's soccer team showed what determines the winner is endurance over the long haul.

The Pioneers, who tied a school record in the contest, spotted Monmouth College a 2-0 lead through the first 32 minutes before rallying for a big 4-3 victory in Midwest Conference play Saturday afternoon. Grinnell's record came in the assists department, where the Pioneers recorded their 31st of the season.

Jasper Yang '21 had two goals, while Max Sorenson '22 and Henry Cladouhos '22 had one each as Grinnell improved to 6-9-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the league. Monmouth, attempting to secure a MWC Tournament berth in the contest, dipped to 8-6-2 overall and 3-3-2 in the league.

After Monmouth went ahead, Sorenson cut the gap in half five minutes before halftime with his third goal of the season and fourth of his career.

Yang evened the score two minutes into the second period with an assist by Mikoto Kobayashi '20, his fifth assist of the year and 15th in his career. Monmouth retook the lead in the 72nd minute, but not to be outdone, Yang scored eight minutes later with his team-high 10th goal of the season and 26th in his career.

Rather than settle for overtime, the Pioneers struck again just a bit later as Henry Cladouhos '22 scored his sixth goal of the season - and career - in the 82nd minute. Matias Bambi '23 had the assist, his second as a Pioneer. Grinnell held off the Fighting Scots from there to secure the win.

John Riley O'Toole '23 and Jared Cloutier '20 shared keeper duties, with O'Toole making two saves and Clutier three. Grinnell won the shots battle 14-13, with Yang taking five shots, Cladouhos three and Kobayashi two.

Cloutier ranks third among all-time Pioneer keepers with 52 games played. Kobayashi is fifth in career assists, while Yang is sixth in shots attempted with 118 and ninth in points with 61.

On the all-time season chart, Yang is fourth in shots on goal with 31 and eighth in shots attempted with 49. As a team, Grinnell's 103 points rank third all-time and the 251 shots attempted and 122 shots on goal both rank seventh.

The Pioneers close out their campaign next Saturday against Illinois College. Action in Jacksonville, Ill., begins at 1:30 p.m.
