Pioneer volleyball team loses tight battle to Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - In a battle of once-beaten Midwest Conference teams, Illinois College slipped past Grinnell College in three sets Friday night.

Though the result was a sweep, only 13 points separated the two teams as the Lady Blues posted a 25-21, 25-19, 25-22 win to improve to 7-1 in the league and 18-6 in all matches.

Grinnell, 5-2 in the MWC and 20-4 overall, got 16 kills from Kaylin Kuhn '21 and seven by Rachel Woock '23. Julianna Roth '22 added 28 assists, Emmy Nyquist '23 had two service aces and Anna Killin '22 and Hannah Taylor '21 added two blocks apiece. Kuhn and Payton Lowrey '22 had 19 and 18 digs, respectively.

Grinnell led the first set 18-17 after Taylor's kill, but the Lady Blues scored two points to take the lead. A service error by Illinois College tied things at 19-all before the hosts reeled off three points and went on to win from there.

The second set was tight early, with Grinnell trailing by two before forcing a 13-all tie on a kill by Kuhn and service error by the Lady Blues. However, Illinois College went on a seven-point run and cruised from there.

Grinnell dug itself into a 10-4 hole in the third set but came back strong, making it a 15-14 gap on Lowrey's ace serve. The Pioneers later trailed 17-15 before going ahead by a point with a three-point run that included a kill by Killin and two attack errors by the hosts.

Illinois College countered with a run of its own for a 21-18 edge. But then it was the Pioneers' turn, as they used a 4-1 run to tie things at 22-all. Olivia Jensen '22 had a kill in that span, while Roth and Taylor combined on a block.

But the rally was short-lived, as the Lady Blues fired off three straight points to secure the win.

Grinnell will attempt to earn a spot in the MWC Tournament Saturday when it plays at Monmouth College. Action begins at 1 p.m.
