GRINNELL, Iowa – Not only were the Grinnell College volleyball fans treated to a great match Friday night, but they saw some history in the process.
Grinnell rallied past Lake Forest College in four sets at Darby Gymnasium while All-Midwest Conference performer
Kaylin Kuhn '21 moved into some elite company.
In the fourth set of the 24-26, 25-17, 25-21, 25-20 win over the Foresters, Kuhn pounded down the 1,000th kill of her storied career. She not only became just the seventh Pioneer to achieve that, but the fastest player to do so by accomplishing it in her 69th match. The previous record was 81 matches.
Grinnell improved to 2-0 in the MWC and 16-2 in all matches. The overall win total ranks fourth in program history. Lake Forest dipped to 0-2 in the MWC and 6-11 overall.
Kuhn finished the night with 18 kills while hitting .298.
Rachel Woock '23 added 12 kills and
Julianna Roth '22 dished out 38 assists. Roth moved up to fifth on Grinnell's career assists chart with 1,775.
Grinnell served up 11 aces in the contest, with Woock posting five of those and Roth and
Payton Lowrey '22 two apiece.
Olivia Jensen '22 had five total blocks and five Pioneers had double-digit digs led by Lowrey's 18. Woock added 14 digs, Kuhn had 13 and
Madison Smith '20 and Roth tallied 12 apiece.
The Pioneers trailed much of the first set, going behind 14-9 midway through and 23-19 later. Grinnell managed to tie it at 24-all on Lowrey's ace serve, but the Foresters scored twice after that to win the set.
The hosts built a 12-9 lead in the second set before going on a critical five-point run with the aid of Roth's serve. She had an ace in that span, while Kuhn and
Hannah Taylor '21 each had kills as the Pioneers stretched the lead to 17-9. They went on to win comfortably.
The most dramatic set was the third, as the Pioneers fell behind 14-9 and later 19-14. Woock served Grinnell right back into contention, sparking a five-point run with the aid of an ace that allowed Grinnell to tie things at 19-all. There were two ties after that, including 21-all, before a kill by Woock started a four-point Grinnell run. Kuhn added a kill during that span and
Anna Killin '22 and Taylor finished it off with a combo block.
The fourth set was tight most of the way. Kuhn garnered the 1,000th kill of her career on a point that put Grinnell ahead 10-6. It was later a 17-16 Pioneer lead when they went on a three-point run with the aid of Smith's serving.
A three-point spurt a bit later, which included kills by Jensen and Woock, pushed the hosts ahead 23-17. Lake Forest crawled within 23-19 when a service error put Grinnell a point from victory. After the Foresters scored, Kuhn finished things off with a booming kill.
Grinnell is right back at it Saturday as Beloit College visits Darby Gymnasium. Action begins at 1 p.m.
