Cold shooting haunts Pioneers in home opener loss to Wartburg

GRINNELL, Iowa - With its shooting reflecting the cold temperatures outside, the Grinnell College men's basketball team dropped its 2019-20 home opener to Wartburg College by a 92-74 count Tuesday night.

Grinnell hit just 30.7 percent of its shots at Darby Gymnasium, including 20.0 from 3-point range, while dipping to 0-2 on the season. Conversely, the 2-0 Knights hit 72 percent of their field goal tries.

Hitting double-digit scoring for the Pioneers were Jackson Qualley '22 and Patrick Simms '22 with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Brad Geiman '21 added nine points, six rebounds and two blocks and now ranks sixth in program history with 97 career blocks.

Will Bebee '22 added eight boards and two blocks and Qualley dished out three assists. Jackson Breshears '21 contributed four of the Pioneers' 14 steals and Tyler Grumhaus '21 had three.

Trailing by three points early, the Pioneers erupted for an eight-point run as Noah Bumanglag '23 made a layup and Qualley and Brady Vest '22 knocked down 3-pointers for an 11-6 lead. However, the Knights rallied and led 41-38 at intermission.

Grinnell took its final lead of the contest at the 14:41 mark of the second half when Breshears' free throws made it 52-51. But the visitors countered with a 10-point run to make it 61-52. Grinnell made a few charges, coming within four three times including 64-60 on Qualley's free throw at the 9:26 mark.

The Pioneers sliced the gap to five at 73-68 at the 6:15 mark on Aiden Gilbert's free throws, but Wartburg followed with a five-point run and never looked back.

The Pioneers are back in action next Wednesday at Eureka College.
