BELOIT, Wis. - Grinnell College's men's basketball team bounced back from Saturday's loss at St. Norbert College in dominating fashion Wednesday, blowing by Beloit College 121-104.
The win secured a No. 2 seed for Grinnell in next week's Midwest Conference Tournament as the Pioneers improved to 14-3 in the league and 18-5 overall. The MWC mark is Grinnell's best since the 2012-13 season and the overall record the best since 2013-14.
Grinnell, which stretched its winning streak against Beloit to six dating back to 2016, has won nine of its last 10 games.
Jackson Qualley '22 led the Grinnell scoring attack with 24 points, while
Vinny Curta '19 had a balanced game with 21 points, eight assists and five steals. He was 5-of-6 from the free throw line to move within four of the NCAA Division III record for career free throw attempts.
Others scoring in double digits were
Zachary Stice '21 with 15 points,
Tyler Grumhaus '21 with 14,
Hannes Kogelnik '21 with 12 and
Patrick Simms '22 with 10. Stice and Simms each had career highs of four steals,
Griffin Boehm '19 added six rebounds and
Brad Geiman '21 blocked two shots.
Curta moved up three Grinnell career categories in the game. He now ranks third in scoring with 2,227 points, fifth in field goal attempts with 1,476 and seventh in steals with 180. Boehm moved up to seventh for career offensive rebounds with 191.
A big run midway through the first half was key to the Grinnell win. Trailing by a point at 27-26, the Pioneers reeled off 15 consecutive points. Grumhaus began things with a layup, followed by a string of points by Qualley that included a jumper, free throw, jumper and 3-pointer. Stice followed with a 3-pointer and Curta a jumper to put Grinnell up 40-26 with 8:44 left.
Grinnell kept it up from there, leading 70-44 at halftime and continuing that into the second half to pick up the win. With the loss, Beloit dipped to 5-12 in the MWC and 7-17 overall.
Grinnell moved onto or up five categories in the program's all-time top 10 season list. The Pioneers are now seventh in field goals made in a season with 475 and rebounds with 1,037, eighth in points with 2,716 and assists with 495 and ninth in field goals made with 879.
The Pioneers will attempt to finish the 2018-19 home slate with an unblemished record when Lake Forest College visits Darby Gymnasium Saturday. The Senior Day affair is slated for 3 p.m.
