ORLANDO, Fla. – The Grinnell College men's tennis team showed it meant business from the start of its spring break trip to Florida, shutting out a team that had won 10 of its last 11 matches.

Grinnell opened the day with a 9-0 shutout victory over North Central College Monday morning and followed up that night with a tight 5-4 setback to Goucher College.

Grinnell got its match with North Central out to a solid start with a doubles sweep from the teams of
Bowen Mince '22-
Ben Cobin '20 (8-6),
Sam Stickels '19-
Michael Conlin-Brandenburg '21 (8-3) and
Zach Lane '19-
George Kaslow '21 (8-4).

Five of those players also won singles matches, including three-set thriller wins by Lane at No. 2 (5-7, 6-4, 10-7) and Kaslow at No. 6 (4-6, 6-1, 10-5). Other winners were Mince at No. 1 (6-3, 6-0), Stickels at No. 3 (6-1, 6-2), Cobin at No. 4 (6-4, 6-2) and
Jack Lunn '20 at No. 5 (6-2, 6-3).

Against Goucher, the Pioneers got an 8-7 win from Cobin and Mince at No. 1 doubles. Mince won a 6-0, 5-7, 10-4 nail-biter at No. 1 singles, Stickels posted a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 3 and Cobin won 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4.

During the day, Cobin moved up to 22nd on Grinnell's career singles wins chart with 54 and 21st in doubles victories with 51. Stickels is 23rd in doubles wins with 50.

Grinnell, 9-3 on the season, faces Concordia University on Tuesday.
