CHICAGO, Ill. - Grinnell College's baseball team got off to a great start against a tough University of Chicago squad Saturday afternoon, grabbing a 2-1 lead on the Maroons through three innings.
Â
But the hosts bounced back after that to secure a 12-5 win and later recorded a 20-1 victory to earn the sweep.
Vince Reilly '19 belted his first collegiate career homer for the Pioneers in the first game while getting two hits and
Brady LeSher went 3-of-4 with a double.
Â
Chicago took a 1-0 lead in the first, but
Noah Daniel '19 had an RBI single to center in the second and
Julian Cabrera '19 scored on an error in the third to put Grinnell (11-15) on top. Chicago (11-4) answered with seven runs in the fourth for an 8-2 edge.
Â
The Pioneers made things interesting, though, scoring individual runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings on LeSher's RBI double to left, an error that allowed
Kory Czajkowski '20 to score and Reilly's solo homer to left. The Maroons scored three in the fifth inning and got an insurance run in the eighth to seal the win.
Â
Grinnell managed four runs in the second inning, including a double by
Matthew Inaba '22. The Pioneers got their run in the fourth inning when
Noah Daniel's '19 groundout to short scored
Jack Hager '20.
Â
The Pioneers' twin bill at Beloit College Sunday has been cancelled. Grinnell's next regularly-scheduled action is April 27-28 with four home games against Illinois College.
