GRINNELL, Iowa - Saturday's second game against Knox College was one for the record books for the Grinnell College softball team.
The Pioneers celebrated Senior Day by tying four school records in a 13-7 win over Knox College. That completed a doubleheader sweep after the Pioneers took the opening game 10-0 in five innings.
In the second game, Grinnell (8-4 Midwest Conference, 11-19 overall) tied a school record with five doubles and
Ashley Wehrenberg '19 tied Pioneer marks with four hits and three doubles.
Emily Jordan '19 added a school record by being hit twice with pitches.
As Wehrenberg went 4-for-4 at the plate, several other players also contributed to the 13-hit attack.
Mya Davis '21 belted a homer and single,
Mikyla Murphy '19 added a double and single,
Lily Seibert '19 had a double and
Megan Gardner '20 had two singles.
Elle Adams '22 earned the pitching win in relief, scattering two hits in 3-2/3 innings.
After a scoreless first inning, the Pioneers erupted for 10 runs in the second. Wehrenberg began the attack with a two-run double to left-center, Murphy had an RBI single to right-center, Davis plated a run with an infield single and Gardner knocked in a run with a single down the left field line for a 5-0 lead.
Jordan continued things by being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Wehrenberg hit an RBI single to left and Murphy cleared the bases with a three-run double to left-center.
Knox (1-11 MWC, 5-27 overall) made things interesting, though, coming within 10-7 before the Pioneers got some insurance as Seibert hit an RBI double to left-center in the fifth, Davis sent a solo homer over the left-center field fence in the sixth and Wehrenberg rapped a run-scoring double to left in the sixth.
Darice Wheeler '21 fired a four-hit shutout for Grinnell in the opener and fanned six batters. She helped her cause at the plate with a homer, her Pioneer career-leading 25th. Jordan added a double and single,
Sidney Litke '19 and
Maddie Matsubara '22 each had double and Murphy had two singles.
Grinnell got all the runs it needed in the second inning on Litke's two-run double to left-center. The Pioneers tacked on five more runs in the third as Wheeler blasted a solo homer to left, Davis hit an RBI single to left, Jordan had an RBI single up the middle and later scored on a wild pitch and Murphy scored via an error. In the fourth, Jordan had a two-run double to left and Wehrenberg hit a sacrifice fly to center.
Like several recent outings, there was again plenty of movement on Grinnell's career charts. Jordan ranks third in games played with 131, while Litke is seventh with 127 and 10th in games started with 120. Jordan ranks eighth in career at-bats with 352, Wehrenberg is 10th in doubles with 20 and Davis is fifth in home runs with seven.
Flynn Johnson '21 moved up to 10th in fielding chances with 467.
Grinnell steps out of league play Tuesday with two games at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa.
