INDIANOLA, Iowa - Grinnell College's softball team tuned up for its stretch run in Midwest Conference play with a pair of non-conference wins at Simpson College Tuesday.
Grinnell took the opener 9-1 and followed with a 6-2 decision to stretch its winning streak to four games. The Pioneers rapped out 12 hits in the first game, including a homer by
Darice Wheeler '21 as she boosted her Grinnell career-leading total to 26. Wheeler added a strong pitching performance, giving up just three hits and striking out three in a complete-game effort.
Maddie Matsubara '22 added a triple and double for Grinnell (13-19), while
Leila Bishop-Parise '21,
Ashley Wehrenberg '19,
Emily Jordan '19 and
Flynn Johnson '21 all singled twice. Additionally,
Mya Davis '21 hit a sacrifice fly to set the Grinnell career record with five.
The Pioneers shot out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Matsubara's two-run triple, and made it a 5-0 game in the fifth as Davis hit a sacrifice fly to center and Jordan and Johnson each had RBI singles. In the sixth, Wheeler belted a two-run homer and Jordan and Johnson again hit RBI singles. Simpson (18-16) got its lone run in the bottom of the sixth.
Jordan had a double in Grinnell's 11-hit attack in the second game, while Matsubara, Davis, Wehrenberg and Johnson all singled twice. Winning pitcher
Elle Adams '22 gave up four hits and struck out five while pitching a complete game.
Grinnell got on the board in the first inning on Davis' RBI single to left-center. Simpson tied it in the second, but the Pioneers erupted for five runs in the third as Davis hit an RBI single to center, Wehrenberg knocked in a run with a bunt, Jordan bashed a two-run double to left and Johnson delivered an RBI single to right. Simpson closed out the scoring with a run in the bottom of the third.
Wehrenberg now ranks fourth in Grinnell history for games played with 130, while
Sidney Litke '19 is sixth with 129 and eighth in games started at 121. Jordan ranks eighth in career at-bats with 360 and RBIs with 56, and fourth in putouts with 438. Â Wheeler is fifth in career runs scored with 73 and third in walks with 46. Johnson and Wehrenberg rank seventh and eighth for career fielding chances with 479 and 478, respectively.
Grinnell sees its final regular-season home action Wednesday when MWC leader Monmouth College visits for a 3 p.m. twin bill.
