Grinnell softball team takes 2 from Monmouth to grab share of MWC lead

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College opened Wednesday two games back in the Midwest Conference softball standings.

The Pioneers finished the day by boosting themselves into a first-place tie. Grinnell knocked off MWC leader Monmouth College 6-1 and 2-1 to improve to 10-4 in the league and 15-19 overall. That forces a four-way tie for the conference lead, as Monmouth is also 10-4 - and 13-19 overall - Lake Forest College owns a 9-3 record and St. Norbert College is 11-5.

The Pioneers rode stellar pitching performances from Darice Wheeler '21 and Elle Adams '22. Wheeler scattered nine hits and struck out five while winning the opener while helping herself at the plate by going 3-for-3 with four RBIs and a homer.

Adams tossed an eight-hitter in the second game and struck out three without issuing a walk. Grinnell managed four hits in the game, a double and single by Mya Davis '21 and two singles from Maddie Matsubara '22.

Monmouth scored first in the second game before Grinnell tied it in the bottom of the first when Davis hit an RBI double down the left-field line. Davis again provided the heroics in the third inning, lifting an RBI single to left field to break the tie. That lead would hold up the rest of the way.

Besides Wheeler's hitting effort in the first game, Davis had a double and single and Leila Bishop-Parise '21, Matsubara and Emily Jordan '19 each singled twice. Ashley Wehrenberg '19 added a double.

Grinnell struck for a run in the third inning on Wheeler's RBI single to center, and added three more in the fifth when Wheeler belted a no-doubt homer over the right field fence to make it 4-0. It sent Wheeler's Grinnell career-leading homer total to 27. Jordan hit an RBI single to left to finish off the scoring in the inning.

Monmouth got on the board in the sixth, but the Pioneers countered in the bottom of the inning when Wehrenberg's double to left-center scored a run.

Wheeler moved up to second on Grinnell's career RBI list with 93, while Jordan took the No. 8 spot with 57. Wheeler and Wehrenberg are tied for eighth on the career doubles chart with 21, Jordan is sixth in at-bats with 366 and Sidney Litke '19 moved up to fifth in games played with 131 and seventh in games started with 124.

Pitching-wise, Wheeler is fifth in career wins with 18 and 10th in both innings pitched and appearances with 190.1 and 42, respectively. Wehrenberg moved up to fifth in fielding assists with 235 and Flynn Johnson '21 is fourth in double plays turned with 12.

Grinnell heads to Janesville, Wis., to close out the regular season with doubleheaders against Ripon College and Lawrence University.
