JANESVILLE, Wis. - The Grinnell College record book took quite a beating as the Pioneers outlasted Ripon College 21-17 Friday night as the Pioneers remained tied for first place in the Midwest Conference.
The Pioneers set or tied seven school records in the contest, which followed a 6-4 win to not only give Grinnell the sweep but push its winning streak to eight games with two regular-season contests to play.
Additionally, Grinnell inched ever so close to earning a repeat trip to the MWC Tournament.
Grinnell established new school marks for hits in a game (23), doubles (six) and total bases (38) and
Maddie Matsubara '22 established a new Pioneer best with five hits in a game. Tying records were
Darice Wheeler '21 and Matsubara with four runs each, Matsubara with three doubles and Wheeler with two homers.
Grinnell (12-4 MWC, 17-19 overall) got four hits from
Leila Bishop-Parise '21 in the second game and three each from Wheeler and
Emily Jordan '19. Grinnell dug itself into a 10-2 hole before coming back, scoring four runs in the second inning and adding seven in the fourth thanks in part to a two-run double by Bishop-Parise and three-run homer by Matsubara.
The Pioneers added seven more runs in the sixth inning, with Wheeler's two-run homer providing the spark. Wheeler helped herself pitching, too, getting the win in relief. She struck out nine batters and gave up just two hits in just over four innings pitching.
Grinnell used a big fifth inning to take the opener. With the teams tied at 1-all, Matsubara had an RBI double, Wheeler belted a two-run homer and
Mya Davis '21 had a solo homer to push Grinnell ahead 5-2. The Pioneers added an insurance run in the seventh on Davis' RBI.
Wheeler got the pitching win in this game, too, again striking out nine Ripon (4-12 MWC, 9-25 overall) batters and giving up six hits.
Grinnell will conclude the regular season Sunday with two games at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis.
