Pioneers wrap up stellar men's tennis campaign at NCAA D-III Tourney

CHICAGO – Grinnell College's stellar men's tennis season drew to a close Saturday afternoon with a 5-0 loss to nationally-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College in the NCAA Division III National Tournament second round.
 
Grinnell wrapped up its campaign with a 26-5 record, the fourth-most wins in program history. The Gusties, ranked fourth in the Central Region and 16th nationally, moved on with a 20-7 record.
 
The top two Pioneer teams in doubles play each took a game from nationally-ranked duos. Bowen Mince '22 and Ben Cobin '20 lost to the nation's No. 3 team by an 8-1 score, the same count that Sam Stickels '19 and Michael Conlin-Brandenburg '21 fell to the 13th-ranked squad. At the third spot, Zach Lane '19 and George Kaslow '21 battled their foe to an 8-4 decision.
 
Gustavus Adolphus wrapped up the victory in singles play, as one nationally-ranked player beat Mince 6-3, 6-0 at the top spot and another defeated Lane 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2.
 
Stickels wrapped up his Pioneer career with 86 doubles wins, fifth-best in program history, and 60 singles wins which ranks 17th. Lane's 60 doubles wins are 21st-best at Grinnell. Cobin ranks 13th in career singles wins with 63 and 15th in doubles victories with 69.

"I'm proud of how our guys competed, not only today but all season," said Grinnell coach Paige Madara. "We found ourselves in a hole against a strong Gustavus team but never gave up and battled to find opportunities in singles. This team proved all season they can compete with some of the best teams in the nation. We thank our seniors for their commitment and dedication to Grinnell tennis for the past four years and look forward to building upon this seasons successes next year."
