Pioneers keep MWC Baseball Tournament hopes alive with dramatic win over Fighting Scots

GRINNELL, Iowa - With their postseason hopes fading, the Grinnell College baseball team stepped up in a big way.

The Pioneers scored five runs in a two-inning span in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon to rally for a 7-6 victory over Midwest Conference South Division leader Monmouth College.

The win at Pioneer Park, which came after Grinnell celebrated Senior Day, kept the Pioneers' hopes alive for making the four-team MWC Tournament. Grinnell evened its division record at 7-7 with the win while moving to 13-19 overall. Monmouth fell to 9-5 in the MWC South and 21-12 in all games.

Things didn't look encouraging after 5-½ innings, a point in which the Fighting Scots held a 6-2 lead. But all that changed in the bottom of the sixth. Riley Guieb '21 led off with a single to left and, after two groundouts, Julian Cabrera '19 belted a homer over the left-field fence to make it 6-4. Following a Monmouth pitching change, Jack Hager '20 followed Cabrera's lead with a homer over the left-field fence to bring Grinnell within a run.

Monmouth loaded the bases in the top of the seventh before Grinnell pitcher Joe Dudley '20 induced an inning-ending double play. Grinnell drew even, and then some, in the bottom of the seventh. Noah Daniel '19 led off with a double to left field, took third on Jared Booth's '21 sacrifice and scored when Matthew Inaba '22 lifted an RBI single to left. Quinton McNitt '21 added an RBI double to left a bit later to put Grinnell up by a run.

Pitchers Ryan Moeller '21 and Thompson Rick '21 shut Monmouth down the rest of the way to preserve the victory. Dudley earned the pitching win, while Rick got the save. It was the third save of Rick's career, which ranks 10th in program history.

Earlier in the game, Grinnell opened the scoring in the first inning on McNitt's RBI single to right. After Monmouth went up 3-1, Grinnell cut the lead in half in the fourth on Vince Reilly's '19 RBI double to left. Monmouth then went up 6-2 before Grinnell's dramatic comeback.

Grinnell had a season-high 16 hits in the game, with Inaba, Guieb and McNitt each getting three. Inaba also moved up to 10th on Grinnell's season-best list for walks with his 24th.

In the first game, Monmouth held Grinnell to five hits in a 7-0 win. Daniel had two hits for Grinnell, and Brock Weirather '21 tossed seven innings in absorbing the loss.

Sunday will be crunch time for the Pioneers as they play a doubleheader at Monmouth, beginning at noon. A sweep would propel Grinnell to an 11th consecutive trip to the MWC Tournament.
