GRINNELL, Iowa –
Ray Goedeker '22 performed some late heroics Friday, scoring a goal with under four minutes to force overtime.
Then lightning struck twice for the crafty Grinnell College men's soccer player, as he added another goal just a bit over three minutes into overtime to provide the Pioneers with a 2-1 win over Coe College in the season opener for both teams at Springer Field. It marked the seventh win in a row by the Pioneers over the Kohawks.
Grinnell dominated first-half action, outshooting Coe 10-2 but had nothing to show for it on the scoreboard as the contest was knotted at 0-all.
The Kohawks drew first blood in the second half, scoring in the 62nd minute from close range to take a 1-0 lead. The score remained that way until Goedeker's magic in the 85th minute when
Davis Provost '23, seeing his first collegiate action, delivered a corner kick from the left side that Goedeker corralled from 6 yards out and followed with a score.
Grinnell also outshot Coe 12-7 in the second half, which ended with the teams knotted at 1-all. Just three minutes later, on Grinnell's second shot attempt of overtime,
Mikoto Kobayashi '20 popped up a beautiful cross from the left side into the box. Goedeker possessed the ball on the right side of the box and sent a 14-yard shot into the net and sending the Pioneers into celebration. It was the sixth goal of Goedeker's career and 11th assist for Kobayashi.
Grinnell's
Jared Cloutier '20 worked a solid game at keeper for Grinnell, making one save in 93:02 of work in the net. Grinnell won the shots battle 24-9, with Goedeker taking six shots,
Jasper Yang '21 getting off five and Kobayashi and Provost two apiece.
Grinnell hosts its annual alumni game at 3 p.m. Sunday at Springer Field. The Pioneers return to their regular-season slate next Saturday when Buena Vista University visits for a 3 p.m. date.
