Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Scoring flurry is one for the record books as Pioneer men's soccer team drops Buena Vista

GRINNELL, Iowa – One has to take a long look back in the record books to see just what the Grinnell College men's soccer team accomplished Saturday.

The Pioneers scored seven straight goals, and six in the second half, to rally for a 7-3 win over Buena Vista University at Springer Field. The six second-half goals were the most for the Pioneers in a half in more than 40 years when they did it against Monmouth College on Sept. 30, 1978.

Grinnell's six assists rank second in program history and 32 shots rank eighth.

Henry Cladouhos '22 served up a hat trick for the Pioneers as they remained unbeaten at 2-0 on the season. Mikoto Kobayashi '20 added two goals, while Thomas Pflipsen '20 and Max Sorenson '22 had one each.

Jared Cloutier '20 and John Riley O'Toole '23 combined keeper duties for the Pioneers.

Buena Vista shot out to a 2-0 lead in the first 20 minutes of the game, but Cladouhos cut the margin in half with a goal in the 29th minute on an assist by Sam Naik '21. On the play, Cladouhos took a pass from Naik and slipped the ball pass the keeper.

Cladouhos tied the game in the 57th minute as Jasper Yang '21 worked the ball to Ray Goedeker '22, who was running the sideline. Goedeker booted it to Cladouhos in the box and he put it in for a goal.

Grinnell quickly took - and upped - its lead in a three-minute span, as Pflipsen scored in the 62nd minute and Kobayashi in the 63rd and 65th minutes. Pflipsen's goal came as he headed the ball in after a corner kick. On Kobayashi's first goal, Cladouhos ran down the field and got it right outside the goal before crossing it to Kobayashi.

Cladouhos also assisted the next goal, running down the field and passing it to Kobayashi who scored from just outside the box into the right corner of the net. In the 72nd minute, Sorenson scored after taking a pass from Ben Heller '20 and putting the ball in the upper right part of the net.

Cladouhos added his third goal of the game in the 76th minute when he got an assist from Sorenson. Grinnell had 16 players take at least one shot, with Cladouhos firing off seven and Kobayashi, Yang and Sorenson three each.

The Pioneers are right back at it Sunday, playing at Carleton College at 1:30 p.m.
