ST. PAUL, Minn. - After enduring two consecutive heart-breakers where the opponent scored late to win, Grinnell College's men's soccer team saw the ball bounce the other way Friday night.
Sam Naik '21 scored his first goal of the year just under six minutes into overtime as the Pioneers came away with a 2-1 victory over the University of Northwestern-St. Paul. Grinnell, playing its second game in three nights, improved to 3-2 on the season while the Eagles dipped to 0-5. It was the second goal of Naik's career.

Jasper Yang '21 scored his first goal of the year on Naik's assist in the 39th minute to push the Pioneers ahead 1-0 in the first half. It was the 17th goal of Yang's career. On the play, the Pioneers sent a long pass from the right side that Yang controlled on the run as he entered the box and beat the keeper with a shot to the bottom part of the net.
The score remained the same until the hosts got a goal in the 63rd minute to force a 1-all tie. The teams battled on even ground the rest of the way before the Pioneers got the game-winner in overtime. On the play,
Mikoto Kobayashi '20 controlled the ball on the left side of the field and worked a pass into Yang in the box. Yang took a few dribbles and passed to the right to Naik, who delivered a shot into the lower right part of the net to send the Pioneers into celebration.
Grinnell owned the shots battle 21-17, including seven shots on goal, and led 7-6 in corner kicks. Naik, Yang and
Zeke Miller '21 had three shots each for the Pioneers, while
Noah Guyton '23,
Carlos Piedrasanta '20 and
Henry Cladouhos '22 added two each.
Jared Cloutier '20 and
John Riley O'Toole '23 shared keeper duties for the Pioneers, with Cloutier making three saves and O'Toole one. Cloutier was credited with the win.
The Pioneers remain in Minnesota Saturday, facing Bethany Lutheran College at 1 p.m. in Mankato.
