Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Grinnell men's soccer team scores fast and often in wild win over Iowa Wesleyan

GRINNELL, Iowa - In a wild game that saw eight second-half goals, including four by the hosts within a three-minute span, the Grinnell College men's soccer team emerged with a 5-3 victory over Iowa Wesleyan University Monday at Springer Field.

Carlos Piedrasanta '20 had a hat trick for the Pioneers, his first three goals of the season, while Jasper Yang '21 and Keegan Kass '22 added one goal each as the hosts improved to 4-3 on the season.

After a scoreless first half, the 0-5-1 Tigers struck quickly in the second half with goals in the 47th and 51st minutes. But then it was Grinnell's turn, as the Pioneers got their first score in the 55th minute when Piedrasanta found the back of the net on Ray Goedeker's '22 assist. On the play, Goedeker possessed a free kick from midfield in the right side of the box and sent the ball to Piedrasanta, who headed it in from five yards out from the left side of the box.

Piedrasanta was right back at it a minute later, tying the game on an assist by Yang. Piedrasanta took the ball from Yang and booted it from the left side of the box into the upper right corner of the net.

That same duo connected again a minute later, as Yang assisted Piedrasanta's third goal of the game. Yang began the action when he sent a free kick from well outside the box to the left side of the box, where an onrushing Piedrasanta headed the ball into the right side of the net.

Yang got into the scoring act a minute after that, scoring his third goal of the season on an assist by Sam Naik '21. Naik got the ball at the top of the box and sent a short pass to Yang, who worked in front of the Iowa Wesleyan keeper and tapped a soft high shot over the Tiger's hands for a 4-2 lead.

Iowa Wesleyan sliced the gap to 4-3 in the 63rd minute, but Kass gave Grinenll some breathing room with his first goal of the season in the 86th minute. Matias Bambi '23 was credited with the assist. Bambi worked the ball to Kass, who was in the right side of the box and sent a shot toward the left side of the net. Though it would have gone in anyway, the ball was inadvertently blocked by an Iowa Wesleyan player into the net.

Grinnell outshot the visitors 12-10, with Piedrasanta taking three shots and Yang and Davis Provost '23 two apiece.

Jared Cloutier '20 worked the first 60 minutes at keeper and had a save. John Riley O'Toole '23 finished off the game.

The Pioneers are off until Saturday when they play at the University of Dubuque. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
