DUBUQUE, Iowa – Grinnell College's men's soccer team went toe-to-toe with once-beaten University of Dubuque before losing a 3-1 decision on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers trailed just 1-0 at halftime before the Spartans tacked on a goal in the 49th minute. But then Grinnell made things interesting, as
Noah Guyton '23 scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the 77th minute to slice the gap in half.
On the play,
Henry Cladouhos '22 dribbled out in front of the box and lofted a perfect ball into Guyton. Guyton then worked in, beat the keeper and put the ball in the bottom right part of the net. It was the third assist of Cladouhos' season and career at Grinnell.
Dubuque added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute to secure the win and improve to 5-1-1. Grinnell dipped to 4-4.
The Pioneers managed seven shots, with
Ray Goedeker '22 taking two and
Thomas Pflipsen '20,
Jasper Yang '21, Guyton,
Sam Naik '21 and Cladouhos adding one each.
Jared Cloutier '20 worked the first 61 minutes at keeper and had one save, while
John Riley O'Toole '23 added two saves the rest of the way.
Grinnell opens Midwest Conference play next Saturday at Lake Forest College. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.
