GRINNELL, Iowa – The climate may not have been cooperating, but that didn't faze the Grinnell College women's soccer team in the slightest.
The Pioneers put together perhaps their most complete match of the season Wednesday at Springer Field while batting to a 1-all tie with unbeaten Simpson College.
Esmé Kayim-Yanko '21 scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season to put Grinnell ahead in the second half. The score accounted for the first goal Simpson's defense has given up the entire season.
The Storm managed to score later in the half to force a tie, which it remained the rest of the way.
The contest start was delayed 1 hour, 15 minutes due to lightning and was halted at the end of regulation due to darkness.
Elizabeth Hunt '21 was nothing short of masterful in her performance as Grinnell's keeper, coming up with several big saves – particularly in the second half – while tallying eight for the game.
After a scoreless first half, Kayim-Yanko got the Pioneers on the board in the 50
th minute with a perfect shot on goal. She possessed the ball just outside the box on the left side and curled a spot-on shot over the keeper and into the goal, sending Grinnell into celebration.
Simpson, 4-0-2 on the season, managed a goal eight minutes later. Both teams got off shots down the stretch, but Hunt as well as Simpson's keeper made key saves to keep the contest at 1-all.
Grinnell, 2-3-1 on the season, managed eight shots in the game. Besides Kayim-Yanko's score, others getting shots were
Valencia Alvarez '20,
Simo Bambi '20,
Lauren Edwards '20,
Cally Carr '21,
Anna Engelhardt '21,
Alyssa Radakovich '21 and
Crys Moosman '21. Shots by Edwards and Moosman were on goal.
Grinnell travels to Madison, Wis., on Saturday to face Edgewood College. Action begins at noon.
