APPLETON, Wis. –
Jasper Yang '21 converted a hat trick Sunday, but it wasn't quite enough as the Grinnell College men's soccer team lost a hard-fought 4-3 decision at Lawrence University.
The contest was not only back and forth, but also physical as five yellow cards were issued including four on the Vikings.
After Lawrence took a 2-0 lead in the first 26 minutes, Yang cut the gap in half with a goal in the 38th minute on an assist by
Carlos Piedrasanta '20. It was Piedrasanta's second assist of the season and third in his career. On the play, Piedrasanta sent a beautiful flick of the ball off his back heel to Yang, who fired a rocket past the keeper from 25 yards out.
Lawrence managed another goal in the 42nd minute for a 3-1 halftime lead. Grinnell definitely won the second half, outshooting Lawrence 10-4 and outscoring the Vikings 2-1 in that span. That began with Yang's second goal of the game in the 57th minute on a penalty kick to make it 3-2. Prior to the play, Yang was taken down in the box while rushing with the ball toward the goal. Yang was awarded the PK, and promptly fired the ball into the bottom left part of the net.
The Vikings got some breathing room in the 70th minute with a goal for a 4-2 edge before Yang converted two minutes later to complete the hat trick and make it a one-goal game again. It was Yang's team-high sixth goal of the season and 22nd of his career.
Zac Reeves '20 assisted the goal, his first of the season and sixth in his career. On the play, the ball was thrown in from the left side of the field and bounced off two Lawrence players before Yang redirected it into the goal from short range.
Grinnell gave its all in the closing minutes to tie the game, but to no avail as the Vikings improved to 2-0 in the Midwest Conference and 5-3-1 overall. Grinnell moved to 0-2 in the league and 4-6 in all games.
Grinnell won the shots battle 17-12, with Yang taking seven shots,
Ray Goedeker '22 getting off four and
Mikoto Kobayashi '20 adding three. Yang now ranks 10th in Pioneer history with 99 shots attempted.
Grinnell keeper
Jared Cloutier '20 made one save in the game.
The Pioneers return to the home pitch Tuesday for a non-conference test against Westminster College. Action begins at 4:30 p.m.
