APPLETON, Wis. – Grinnell College's women's soccer team parlayed timely offense with stingy defense to come away with a 2-0 shutout of Lawrence University under gloomy skies Sunday.
The win, Grinnell's second shutout in a row and fifth of the season, pushed the Pioneers to 1-0-1 in the Midwest Conference and 4-4-2 overall. The Pioneers stretched their winning streak over the Vikings, who are 1-1 in the league and 6-4 overall, to four matches while getting their eighth win against Lawrence in the last nine meetings.
Elizabeth Hunt '21 continued her impressive season at keeper, coming up with her fourth shutout of the year and seventh of her career. She had three saves in the winning effort and now ranks fifth in program history for career wins (16) and games played at keeper (34), sixth in saves (145) and seventh in shutouts.
Julia Sheehan-Klenk '23 gave Grinnell all the offense it would need in the 15th minute when she converted her second goal of the season.
Issy Schwiebert '21 had the assist, her first of the season and second of her career. Following a throw-in, Sheehan-Klenk beat her defender on the right side, entered the box and angled a shot past the diving keeper into the lower left side of the net.
Alyssa Radakovich '21 gave the Pioneers some insurance in the 62nd minute when she scored her third goal of the season and six of her career on an assist from
Valencia Alvarez '20. Alvarez stole a throw-in by Lawrence and whipped a pass to Radakovich, who raced down the field into the right side of the box and converted a perfectly-placed shot into the upper portion of the net. It was the second assist of the season for Alvarez and 14th of her career.
The Pioneers dominated the shots battle 16-3, with Alvarez taking seven including six on goal. Alvarez now ranks 10th in program history with 140 shots.
Simo Bambi '20 added three shots, with two on goal, and Radakovich had two with both being on target.
Grinnell also doubled up Lawrence in corners by a 6-3 margin.
The Pioneers return to the home pitch Wednesday when Cornell College visits for a MWC test. Kickoff is at 4 p.m.
