Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Ted Schultz

Pioneers sweep away Rams to snap 18-match losing streak to MWC foe

GRINNELL, Iowa - In the past 18 meetings with Cornell College, there were a few close calls but Grinnell College's volleyball team could never get over the hump.

That all came to an end Friday night at the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) Tournament as the Pioneers swept past the Rams before an enthusiastic crowd at Darby Gymnasium. The 25-20, 25-17, 25-22 win was Grinnell's first over Cornell in 18 tries, dating back to 2002.

That, combined with a four-set win over Carleton College to start the night, extended Grinnell's best ever start to a season as the Pioneers moved to 7-0. The win  snapped Grinnell's six-match losing streak to the Knights.

Grinnell hit .239 in the win over Cornell while holding its opponent to a .075 hitting efficiency. Kaylin Kuhn '21 had 13 kills for Grinnell and Anna Killin '23 added seven while hitting .294.

Julianna Roth '22 contributed 30 assists and Madison Smith '20 served up four of the team's seven aces. Hannah Taylor '21 and Killin each had three blocks and Roth came up with 14 digs.

The first set was tight throughout before Grinnell made a key four-point run late as Smith had two aces and Rachel Woock '23 added two kills to turn an 18-all contest into a 22-18 lead.

Grinnell used a 6-1 run early in the second set to pull away, as Woock and Smith each served two of those points. The Pioneers shot out to a 5-1 lead in the third set, but Cornell came back strong to take the lead. It was close the rest of the way before the Pioneers turned a one-point deficit into a 24-20 lead as Roth served four consecutive points. A kill by Taylor a bit later finished off the victory.

Earlier in the night, Carleton won the opening set against Grinnell 25-19 before the Pioneers reeled off wins of 25-15, 25-19 and 25-18.

Kuhn and Woock provided a solid one-two punch at the net, as Kuhn had 20 kills and hit .400 and Woock added 14 kills while hitting .440. Killin added 10 kills and Roth had 44 assists to go with 12 digs. Lowrey and Kuhn added 13 and 11 digs, respectively.

After losing the first set, Grinnell trailed the second before going on a 7-1 run as Smith served three points and Woock two. The Pioneers never trailed again in the set. The third set was more of the same, as Grinnell pulled away from an 8-all tie with a four-point run to take command for good. Woock served three of those points.

The Pioneers fell behind 3-0 in the fourth set and were still down 9-6 before a five-point run sparked by Smith's four-point service run gave them the lead for good. Another five-point run a bit later sealed the deal.

Grinnell concludes the tourney by facing Luther College at noon Saturday.
