Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

Tough shooting night sinks Grinnell men's basketball team at St. Norbert

DE PERE, Wis. - A night when the ball wouldn't go in the net came at an inopportune time as the Grinnell College men's basketball team dropped a 109-79 decision at St. Norbert College Friday.

The Pioneers made just 36 percent of their field goal tries, including 25.5 percent from 3-point land, against a team receiving votes for the national rankings. The loss sends Grinnell to 6-5 in the Midwest Conference and 10-8 in all games, while the league-leading Green Knights are 10-1 in the conference and 15-3 overall.

Aiden Gilbert '23 continued his recent tear, scoring 24 points for Grinnell. Hannes Kogelnik '21 added 15 points and Jackson Qualley '22 scored 12. Will Bebee '22 and Jackson Breshears '21 shared the team lead in rebounds with four apiece, Morgan Walser '21 added three steals and Brad Geiman '21 and Bebee blocked three and two shots, respectively.

Bebee is now 10th in program history with 86 career blocks. He has 47 this season, seventh-best at Grinnell, and the team's total of 124 is second-best in a season.

Grinnell had two leads in the game, one at 3-2 on Kogelnik's 3-pointer and again at 5-4 on a layup by Qualley. Though the Green Knights took the lead for good shortly after that, Grinnell was still within six at 24-18 on free throws by Gilbert before the hosts took off for a 46-31 halftime lead.

The Pioneers were within 13 early in the second half, but the Green Knights answered with a five-point run and went on to win from there.

The Pioneers will attempt to get back in the win column Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Ripon College.
