Grinnell's wild comeback falls short in loss to St. Norbert

DE PERE, Wis. - An incredible comeback came up just short as the Grinnell College women's basketball team dropped a 59-46 decision at St. Norbert College Friday night.

The Pioneers, 9-9 overall and 5-6 in the Midwest Conference, trailed by 21 points with 7:14 to go before catching fire with a 13-point spurt to close within eight points. However, St. Norbert stopped the bleeding to hold on for the win and improve to 6-12 overall and 5-6 in the league.

Grinnell got 20 points from Tyria Heath '21, who continued her advance to 1,000 career points. She ranks 11th in program history with 953 points. Claire Collier '21 added seven points, while Heath and Kathryn Stender '21 grabbed eight rebounds apiece.

Annie Filkins '23 posted a career-best two steals and Emmy Nyquist '23 dished out two assists. Stender and Ellie Gubbrud '22 blocked one shot apiece as they moved Grinnell's total to 78 on the season, seventh-best in program history.

St. Norbert shot out to a 17-10 lead by the end of the first period and 28-16 by halftime. The Green Knights stretched their cushion to 50-30 by the end of the third period and pushed their lead to a seemingly-comfortable 54-33 with just over seven minutes left in the game.

But that comfort zone was rocked by the Pioneers, beginning with a 3-pointer by Heath. She added consecutive layups to make it a 54-40 cushion with 5:02 left before Collier sank two free throws. Another layup by Heath and two free throws by the junior made it a 54-46 with 2:48 left.

St. Norbert broke its scoreless streak right after that and held Grinnell scoreless the rest of the way to secure the win.

Besides moving to 11th on Grinnell's all-time scoring list, Heath jumped up to 11th in career field goals made (352) and free throws made (211), and 18th in steals (87).

The Pioneers will attempt to get back in the win column Saturday with a 3 p.m. game at Ripon College.
