GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's men hadn't lost to Lawrence University in Darby Gymnasium since the 2009 Midwest Conference Tournament title game.
Though Saturday's atmosphere was similar to that of a championship event, the Pioneers saw to it the outcome wasn't the same as that contest a decade ago.
Grinnell got a late long-range 3-pointer from
Jackson Qualley '22 to force overtime and then worked its way to a 120-115 win over the Vikings before a large and enthusiastic home crowd. That marked the Pioneers' 10th win in a row over Lawrence in Darby.
Grinnell knocked Lawrence from the ranks of the MWC unbeatens while improving to 3-1 in the league and 7-4 overall. Lawrence is also 3-1 in the MWC and 7-4 in all games.
The Pioneers' balanced scoring attack featured a 25-point output from Qualley, 18 points from
Hannes Kogelnik '21 and 17 from
Patrick Simms '22. Also in double digits were
Zachary Stice '21 (16 points),
Jake Benhart '22 (11) and
Christian Brookens '22 (10).
Simms, Kogelnik and Brookens all had three assists, while
Will Dubow '21 blocked three shots and
Will Bebee '22 had two blocks. Dubow now ranks 17th in program history with 35 blocks. Bebee added seven rebounds and Qualley and Brookens each came up with two steals.
The first half was tight throughout, with Grinnell leading 47-46 at its conclusion. The trend continued in the second half, which included multiple ties. But Grinnell saw a four-point lead with 3:57 left evaporate into a five-point Lawrence lead with 22 seconds left.
That's when Kogelnik took charge, drilling a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left to make it a two-point game and moving him up to 13th on Grinnell's all-time chart with 235 treys. The Pioneers then fouled and the Vikings made one of two charity shots to go ahead 101-98.
After taking a timeout, Grinnell quickly got the ball past half-court. Qualley found himself in possession on the right wing and lofted a shot from 24 feet out that swished through the bucket. Lawrence missed a last-ditch layup in the waning seconds to force overtime.
Grinnell trailed temporarily in overtime before taking the lead for good at 110-108 on a 3-pointer by
Tyler Grumhaus '21 with 1:49 left. From there, Grinnell used stellar free throw shooting to ice the victory. The Pioneers, who made all 10 charity shots in overtime, twice were up by one and both times Qualley stretched the lead out with free throws.
His free throws with 13 seconds left made it a 118-115 game and then Dubow all but sealed the win with a steal. Grumhaus was fouled with 5 ticks left and secured the victory with two free throws.
Grinnell is back in Darby Gymnasium Wednesday when Monmouth College visits for a 5:30 p.m. test.
