Pioneer men's tennis team earns split on opening day of highly-competitive UW-Whitewater Tourney

LAKE GENEVA, Wis. - Grinnell College split matches Friday in the highly-competitive University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawk Invitational, opening the day with a 6-3 win over Luther College before falling 6-3 to the host school.


Grinnell's Ben Cobin '20, Michael Conlin-Brandenburg '21, Ishaan Tibrewal '21 and Adam Burke '23 all won three matches on the day at the Lake Geneva Tennis complex. Cobin now ranks 12th in Grinnell history in both singles and doubles wins with 66 and 62, respectively. Conlin-Brandenburg is 24th in doubles victories with 55.

The Pioneers got out to a quick start against Luther, grabbing doubles wins at Nos. 2 and 3 with the teams of Cobin-Conlin-Brandenburg and Tibrewal Burke by scores of 8-3 and 8-1. Bowen Mince '22 and George Kaslow '21 gave the nation's 16th-ranked doubles team all it could handle at the top spot before losing 8-6.

Grinnell completed the victory with singles wins at the Nos. 3 through 6 spots with Cobin (7-6, 6-2), Kaslow (6-0, 6-1), Tibrewal (6-2, 6-4) and Jack Lunn '20 (6-1, 6-4). Mince gave a great battle to the region's 12th-ranked player at No. 1 before losing a 6-4, 4-6, 16-14 marathon.

The Pioneers also started fast against UW-Whitewater, the ninth-ranked team in the region, as Conlin-Brandenburg and Cobin won 8-7 at No. 2 doubles and Burke and Tibrewal won 8-4 at the third spot. Grinnell's other win was a 3-6, 7-5, 10-8 come-from-behind decision by Burke at No. 6 singles.

Grinnell, 3-1 on the season, concludes the tourney with a match Saturday morning against Wheaton College.
