URBANDALE, Iowa - Grinnell College's men's tennis team is expecting plenty of success this season, and the Pioneers took a major step towards that goal Saturday.

The Pioneers broke out to a 2-1 lead through doubles play on their way to a 6-3 victory over nationally-ranked Carleton College at Lifetime Fitness.

Grinnell got two wins each from Ben Cobin '20, Ishaan Tibrewal '21 and Adam Burke '23 while improving to 5-1 with its first win over Carleton since the 2014 campaign. The Knights, ranked eighth in the Central Region and No. 38 nationally, dipped to 4-2.

"It was a tough competitive battle today on every court," said Grinnell coach Paige Madara. "Our guys came out strong in doubles and set the tone for the level of play. Every singles court was a battle and our guys played their best tennis when it mattered. The team has been working hard the past few weeks and it showed today with a true team effort to secure the win."

Cobin teamed with Michael Conlin-Brandenburg '21 to win 8-2 at No. 2 doubles and Tibrewal and Burke posted an 8-7 decision at No. 3.

In singles play, Grinnell won at the Nos. 3 through 6 spots to secure the win. Cobin posted a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 3, George Kaslow '21 gutted out a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 decision at No. 4, Tibrewal was a 6-1, 6-4 winner at No. 5 and Burke earned a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 6.

With his wins, Cobin now ranks 11th in program history for career singles wins with 68 and 11th for doubles victories with 74. Conlin-Brandenburg is 23rd in doubles wins with 57.

The Pioneers play Gustavus Adolphus College and Augustana University (S.D.) next Saturday in St. Peter, Minn.
