Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Ted Schultz

Grinnell men come up just short at Lake Forest in season finale

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Grinnell College's men's basketball team made a charge at the end, but it wasn't quite enough as Lake Forest College earned a 104-96 victory over the Pioneers in the regular-season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon.

Grinnell fell to 9-9 in the Midwest Conference, good for a fourth-place tie, but the Pioneers missed out on the four-team league tournament on a tie-breaker. Grinnell finished 13-12 overall.

Aiden Gilbert '23 scored 29 points for the Pioneers, Hannes Kogelnik '21 poured in 23 and Jackson Qualley '22 and Will Bebee '22 had 11 each. Jackson Breshears '21 grabbed a career-high seven rebounds, the same total as Brad Geiman '21.

Christian Brookens '22 came up with four assists and two steals for Grinnell. Qualley, Geiman, Bebee and Tommy Smith '21 had one block apiece.

Lake Forest, 10-8 in the MWC and 13-12 in all games, got out to a 12-point lead at 41-29 late in the first half when Grinnell stormed back with a 15-4 run. Kogelnik drained two 3-pointers during the spurt and also had a layup, Gilbert added a trey and layup and Qualley hit two free throws as Grinnell closed within 45-44.

The Foresters went up by seven a bit after that before Brady Vest '21 connected on a 3-pointer and Qualley made consecutive buckets to force a 53-all halftime tie.

Kogelnik's 3-pointer to start the second half put the Pioneers ahead 56-53 before the hosts came back. They went up by 13 at one point, but again Grinnell rallied and made it a four-point game at 95-91 on Bebee's free throw with 2:00 left.

Grinnell twice more came within four, the last of those at 100-96 on Gilbert's 3-pointer from the left side, before Lake Forest closed out the game with four free throws.

Grinnell had movement on two team season categories during the game. The Pioneers boosted their rebound total to 1,089, fifth-best in program history, and their point total of 2,217 ranks ninth.
