Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Ted Schultz

Monmouth slips past Grinnell women's soccer team in back-and-forth, double-OT contest

GRINNELL, Iowa - It was the truest form of a back-and-forth soccer match.

After Grinnell College's women dominated the first half, Monmouth College took control in the next 45 minutes to force overtime.

Both teams had chances in the extra period, but neither could capitalize and the Midwest Conference contest went into a second overtime. It was there, with just over three minutes remaining and darkness starting to envelop Springer Field, that the Fighting Scots notched the clinching goal for a 3-2 win.

The Pioneers got to work almost immediately in the game, scoring just five minutes in when Francesca Dalla Betta '22 got her second goal of the season. On the play, Giada Bambi '22 sent a cross just outside the box to Dalla Betta, who flicked it over the keeper's head.

Sixteen minutes later, Bambi got into the scoring act when she perfectly placed a 35-yard free kick from the left side into the net. It was her team-high third goal of the season.

The score remained 2-0 through halftime, but Monmouth (3-10, 2-2 MWC) rallied with goals in the 50th and 69th minutes to force overtime.

Grinnell (2-9-2, 1-2-2 MWC) managed 19 shots in the game, with Dalla Betta taking five, Bambi four and Carlie Duus '24 and Ali Nadalsky '25 three apiece.

Elinor Arneson '23 worked the first half at keeper for Grinnell and had three saves, while Hannah Malicky '22 went the rest of the way and made six stops.

Grinnell's next action is Saturday when Lawrence University visits Springer Field for an 11 a.m. test.
