GRINNELL, Iowa – With such an offensive explosion Wednesday afternoon against Monmouth College, it's no surprise the record book got quite a makeover.
The Pioneers disposed of the Fighting Scots 7-1 and, in the process, tied the school record for assists in a game with seven. That matched the amount in wins over Buena Vista University in 2019 and Knox College in 2011.
Grinnell's goal total was the most since that 2019 victory over Buena Vista. Grinnell's point total of 21 tied for sixth-most in program history, and two assists each by
Dylan Maddux '25 and
Ray Goedeker '22 are tied for fifth-most in a game for the Pioneers.
Jasper Yang '22 converted a hat trick for the second game in a row while boosting his career totals in goals to 44 and points to 99, both third-best at Grinnell. Goedeker's career assist total moved to 16, which ranks sixth in Pioneer history.
The teams were scoreless into the 26th minute when Yang found the back of the net on an assist by
Nate Girard '23.
Zak Serby '25 made it 2-0 in the 39th minute with an unassisted goal.
Grinnell (6-6, 3-2 Midwest Conference) exploded for three goals in four minutes early in the second half. Yang scored his 15th goal of the season in the 51st minute on an assist by Goedeker, and added his 16th a minute later with Maddux and
Davis Provost '23 assisting.
Goedeker put the ball in the back of the net three minutes after that on the assist from Maddux, making it 5-0.
Monmouth (0-10-2, 0-5 MWC) got a goal in the 68th minute, but Grinnell responded with
Peter Murphy '25 scoring in the 75th minute on Goedeker's assist and
Sam Bayliss '24 adding a goal in the 88th minute as
Matias Bambi '24 had the assist.
Carter Benson '24 worked the first 56 minutes at keeper for Grinnell and had one save, while
Jefferson Kolmer '24 went the rest of the way with two saves.
Grinnell dominated the shots battle 24-8, with Yang taking eight shots, Provost getting off four and
Oliver Northing '25 contributing three.
Yang's 16 goals this season ranks fifth in program history and 34 points are sixth. As a team, Grinnell has 26 assists, which ranks fifth all-time.
Grinnell returns to Springer Field Saturday to square off with Lawrence University on Senior Day. Action begins at 1:30 p.m. following the women's contest.
