Grinnell hangs tight with 10th-ranked UW-Whitewater before falling in 3 sets

WHITEWATER, Wis. - Grinnell College proved Saturday afternoon that the margin between itself and one of the top volleyball teams in the nation is razor thin.

The Pioneers battled on nearly even terms with 10th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, losing in three sets by close scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-23.

Kaylin Kuhn '22, who last night went over 1,500 kills for her career, had 11 Saturday while teammate Olivia Jensen '22 added seven and hit .417. Emily Brewer '24 contributed 29 assists and two aces and Malaina Miles '24 posted two blocks.

Payton Lowrey '22 had 17 digs for Grinnell (12-9), which fell behind 6-1 in the first set and couldn't make up much ground.

The second set was a different story. After UW-Whitewater (13-1) bolted out to an 11-6 lead, Grinnell chipped away and eventually went ahead 17-16 on Kuhn's kill.

Later, with the Warhawks leading 18-17, the Pioneers reeled off five points in a row on two kills by Kuhn, one from Rachel Woock '23 and two UW-Whitewater attack errors. A bit later Grinnell took a 23-21 lead on Jensen's kill before the hosts scored four unanswered points for the win.

Grinnell trailed the third set 22-17 before making things interesting with a six-point run. FiveUW-Whitewater attack errors and ace serve by Lowrey gave Grinnell a one-point edge before the Warhawks finished off the win with three consecutive points.

The Pioneers jump back into Midwest Conference play Friday at Lawrence University.
