Grinnell volleyball team remains perfect in MWC play with sweep of Vikings

APPLETON, Wis. - Grinnell College's volleyball team remained perfect in Midwest Conference play Friday night, coasting past Lawrence University 25-13, 25-16 and 25-19.

Grinnell's 4-0 mark in MWC play matches its best start to league competition. Overall, Grinnell won for the fifth time in the last six matches to improve to 13-9.

The Pioneers, who have won five in a row against Lawrence, owned the net with a .312 hitting efficiency compared to the Vikings' rate of .057. The hitting efficiency was the second-best by Grinnell this season.

Kaylin Kuhn '22 had 13 kills and hit .357, Rachel Woock '23 had eight kills with an efficiency of .368 and Olivia Jensen '22 hit .500 with seven kills. 
Julianna Roth '23 added 20 assists and Kuhn a pair of aces. Malaina Miles '24 and Jensen each had two block assists, while Kuhn tallied 11 digs.

Grinnell used a big run to win the first set. Leading 16-13, the Pioneers closed with a nine-point run. Jensen, Woock and Jenna Keller '24 all had kills in that span and Emmy Nyquist '24 served eight points.

It was more of the same in the second set. Leading 12-9, Grinnell opened things up with six unanswered points. Payton Lowrey '22 served five of those points, while Jensen and Kuhn had kills.

The third set was tight much of the way. Grinnell was up 17-16 before getting some breathing room with a 5-1 run. Jensen had two kills and Keller another during the run to help the Pioneers finish off the sweep.

With the loss, Lawrence fell to 0-3 in the MWC and 5-11 overall.

Grinnell has another league road match Saturday, taking on Ripon College at 1 p.m.
