Grinnell women's soccer team gets key MWC draw against league preseason favorite Cornell

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Facing a key league game against the preseason Midwest Conference favorite, the Grinnell College women's soccer team stepped up to the challenge in a big way.

First, Grinnell (2-8-1, 1-1-1 MWC) snapped the Cornell defense's 368-minute scoreless streak with a goal 29 minutes into the contest by Ali Nadalsky '25. Following a goal kick by Grinnell keeper Elinor Arneson '23, the ball bounced into the Pioneers' offensive end of the field. Nadalsky beat her defender, got control of the ball 5 yards outside of the box a bit right of center and fired a shot past the diving keeper that landed in the left side of the net.

The Pioneers looked to be on the verge of victory when the Rams' offense converted, tying the game with less than five minutes left and forcing overtime.

The teams' defenses held each other at bay in both extra periods, resulting in a 1-all tie.

Arneson worked a scoreless first half while making three saves, and Hannah Malicky '22 added an equal number of saves in the final 65 minutes including a key one on a long free kick in overtime.

As a team, Grinnell limited Cornell (6-5-1, 1-0-1 MWC) to nine shots while getting off six itself. Joining Nadalsky with shots for Grinnell were Crys Moosman '22, Hope Nowak '22, Giada Bambi '25, Julia Sheehan-Klenk '23 and Jill Paladino '23. Besides Nadalsky's goal, other shots on goal for Grinnell came from Moosman and Bambi.

Grinnell stays in MWC play Saturday with a contest at Beloit College. Kickoff is at 11 a.m.
