Grinnell strikes first, but Cornell rallies to defeat Pioneers in MWC soccer contest

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Grinnell College struck first in its men's soccer battle against Cornell College, a team that entered the game having won nine of its 11 games this season.

However, the Rams rallied to tie the contest at 1-all by halftime on their way to a 4-1 Midwest Conference victory Wednesday afternoon.

Grinnell (4-6, 1-2 MWC) opened the scoring just three minutes into the game with a goal by Jasper Yang '22, the league's scoring leader. It was Yang's 10th goal this season and 38th of his career.

Additionally, Yang's career point total of 87 moves him past Doug Rowe and into fourth all-time at Grinnell, just eight shy of Chad Stewart. On the play, Yang controlled the ball 30 yards from the goal and sent it over to Davis Provost '23 on the left side. Provost sent it right back to a charging Yang, who gained control just left of center at top of the box and bent a beautiful shot just inside the far post past the diving keeper. It was the first assist of the season for Provost.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of the visitors before Cornell (10-2, 3-0 MWC) tied it in the 36th minute.

It was still 1-all when the hosts whipped off quick goals in the 64th and 69th minutes, and added an insurance goal in the 84th minute.

Grinnell won the shots battle 13-11, with Yang getting five shots and Zak Serby '25 and Oliver Northing '25 taking two apiece.

Carter Benson '24 worked 87 minutes in goal for Grinnell and had four saves, while Jefferson Kolmer '24 finished off the game.

Grinnell stays in MWC play Saturday with a contest at Beloit College. Kickoff is at 11:30 p.m.
