Long touchdowns prove to be the difference in Grinnell's loss to unbeaten Ripon

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's football team tested unbeaten Ripon College much of the game, but long touchdown plays helped the Red Hawks pull away for a 52-8 victory at Rosenbloom Field Saturday afternoon.

Of Ripon's seven touchdowns, four covered 63 yards or more and another 30 yards as the Red Hawks improved to 4-0 in the Midwest Conference and 5-0 overall.

Grinnell, 2-2 in the MWC and 2-3 in all games, got off to a great start by stopping a Ripon drive two plays in on Chaz Del Mar's '22 interception,

Twice, Grinnell drove deep into Ripon territory in the first period and again in the second but couldn't take advantage as the visitors took a 24-0 lead into the locker room.

Grinnell trailed 38-0 in the third period before denting the scoreboard when Grayson Woodhouse '24 found Nick Rhinehart '25 on a 49-yard scoring strike. Leading up to the TD, Danny Carter '22 had a key 8-yard rush and Woodhouse an 8-yard completion to Dustin Saia '22. The point after pass from Avery Hootstein '23 to Saia following the touchdown was successful.

Grinnell, which only had three fewer first downs than the Red Hawks, owned the time of possession 39:45 to 20:15. Woodhouse completed 14-of-25 passes for 175 yards, while Saia had six catches for 67 yards and Rhinehart four snags for 70 yards. Carter led the ground game with 52 yards while improving to 14th all-time at Grinnell for career rushing yards (1,169) and attempts (334).

Defensively, Adam Khater '23 had 10 tackles, Hugh Werner '25 contributed five and Tom Henehan '22 tallied four.

Grinnell is back home again next Saturday when Knox College visits Rosenbloom Field. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
