GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's men's basketball team is used to setting offensive records galore.
But it was a 66-year-old rebounding mark that fell Saturday afternoon as the Pioneers rallied to beat Lincoln Christian University 121-109 at Darby Gymnasium.
The Pioneers grabbed 77 boards in the game, topping the previous record of 73 set in 1955 against Knox College.
Tommy Smith '22 led the charge with a career-high 14 boards, while
Patrick Simms '22 had a career-best nine as did
Will Bebee '22.
Aiden Gilbert '22 and Simms were a potent 1-2 scoring punch with 26 and 25 points, respectively.
David Bluder '25 poured in 16 points,
Adam Phillips '23 had 12 and
Jackson Leone '25 added 11.
Gilbert contributed a career-high seven assists, the same total as Simms. Bebee blocked four shots, pushing him up to fifth on Grinnell's career chart with 111, while Smith had two blocks. Gilbert and Walser each added two steals.
Grinnell trailed by nine points at halftime before rallying in the second half for the win.
With the win, Grinnell improved to 3-1 while Lincoln Christian fell to 2-5.
The Pioneers are back in action Tuesday with a contest at Wartburg College. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
